Oldham is one of my favorite musicians and when I saw the photo of him holding this deck I was psyched. The deck was solid, but it was Gaynor's depiction of BPB that captivated me. After a little research I tracked down Gaynor through his Instagram account and inquired about purchasing a print of his drawing. I was in luck as he still had a few remaining and now it hangs proudly in my office.
Since then, Gaynor has been an inspiration in my own artistic endeavors. His work has a rural folk art feel that tells a story with his rich color palette and his near collage/storybook layouts. He says his artwork is "An interpretation of stories and experiences retold to create an ongoing personal and visual, canonical folktale." Nailed it!
As a painter myself, I feel that music is the ying to art's yang and I'd say Gaynor may agree. Besides his tribute to Oldham, Gaynor sprinkles in or flat out commemorates musicians in his work.
Last month, Quasi and Gaynor teamed up again with Will providing the artwork for both Al Davis and Tyler Bledsoe's pro models.
This collaboration is one I will continue to watch. You can purchase either deck by following the link below and please take a chance to visit Will Gaynor's website. He has quite the portfolio on display and even a shop where you can purchase original artwork, prints, t shirts, as well as that awesome print of Will Oldham.
