The Girl Skateboard Co. Studio Series 003: Jules De Balincourt
I absolutely love the new Studio Series out now on Girl Skateboards. It's a trifecta of my obsessions; Art, Skateboarding, and Super Heroes. The series features the artwork of June De Balincourt, a French-American contemporary artist, and no stranger to collaborating with Girl having completed Series 001 with the team two years ago. He is best known for his abstract, atmospheric paintings with saturated colors, blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
The artwork featured in the deck series is of Balincourt's painting, Myth Makers, a piece that creates a reunion of iconic American superheroes. Here, he humanizes these larger than life figures, reinvestigating notions of the American myth.1 I just love the style in which Balincourt captures these characters. It's very dream-like. Whether it's Superman and a "Batman like" character sitting in chairs, a tiny Hulk, Flash's crossed arms or Bane sitting crossed legged among the group, it's sets a very surreal scene that I am completely enamored with.
Take this amazing painting and divide it into fourths, spread it across four skateboard decks, and you have The Girl Skateboard Company's latest Studio Series. The selected works aim to expand upon the traditional expectations of skateboard art, by featuring artists more commonly associated with contemporary art galleries and museums. I love it and wish more companies would explore this type of collaboration. I don't know if I want to skate these or hang them in my home.
