Nina Simone - Isn't It A Pity

Nina Simone's Emergency Ward is an astounding album. At only four tracks, two of which are George Harrison originals, the album runs nearly 39 minutes. It is a mixture of studio and live recordings, although credited as Simone in concert, and was her musical statement to the Vietnam war. It's Simone's version of the Harrison penned track, Isn't It A Pity, that really resonates with me.

While I love Harrison's original, seemingly a reflection on The Beatles' breakup, Simone really captures the essence of the song and brings new meaning to it's words. She's able to provide an additional layer of heartache by improvising and fleshing out the track to a full 11 minutes. She somehow makes the words more heartfelt and meaningful; Almost palpable. I'm moved to tears nearly every time I hear it.

Maybe it's because of the "times" that we live in, the baggage I bring or the world as a whole, but when I listen to her emotional pleas...it’s just so damn relevant. I hope you will give it a listen and take it to heart.
