Daytrotter / Frog Eyes / Drakkar Sauna

This post consists of numerous important topics. The first deals with one of the most excellent weekly stops I make online. Behold all that is Daytrotter not only provides reviews and features, involving exclusive interviews, but mp3s of live sessions (approx. four songs ea.) recorded at Futureappletree Studio 1, Illinois. The tracks are analog recordings, converted to the all powerful digital format for the purpose of transmission to us. These are the Daytrotter Sessions, and they’re available exclusively through

"What Daytrotter is attempting to do is to not kid around with you and tell you that we found something that you never knew existed. We are going to contribute to the musical landscape, not just toss it around like a used book or a stolen pick-up line. We’re going to give you something that you truly have never heard. We are not giving you songs from someone you love’s record album, thereby stealing from someone you love. We’re giving you exclusive, re-worked, alternate versions of old songs and unreleased tracks by some of your favorite bands and by a lot of your next favorite bands." -Daytrotter

This is a must stop and I know alot of you know about this unique site, but I'm sure there is one reader who does not. I have found numerous bands through this site and that leads me into topic number two.

Two bands that I have not been able to live without for the past few months have been Frog Eyes and Drakkar Sauna, both of which have done Daytrotter Sessions. ( Frog Eyes Session & Drakkar Sauna Session )

Frog Eyes is Carey Mercer, Melanie Campbell, Michael Rak, Spencer Krug, and friends. You may recall the name Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown fame now, but Carey Mercer is a name you need to know. Mercer holds the reins in this whirlwind adventure and they seem to spontaneously combust on each and every song. A fiery ruckus that starts at 10 and ends at 10. Weird, Scary, Genius, a freakin' maniac in the most sincere way, Mercer and Frog Eyes grab you and shake you to the core.

They have some albums at emusic you can download, a myspace, and are with Absolutely Kosher Records. Below is one track from The Folded Palm cd and a link to the Daytrotter Sessions.

.: The Oscillator's Hum
.: Daytrotter Sessions

Drakkar Sauna flips the page on this post and provides a mysterious, eclectic old time country feel that would not be far off from a communal campfire night dance. They are Jeff Stolz and Wallace Cochran, from Lawrence Kansas. They give us a blend of folkish Surrealism, left rough around the edges, just like we like it. Acoustic guitar, blends of percussion and some of the most gorgeous old-timey harmonies you'll ever hear. Below are a few tracks from their two releases.

From their latest Drakkansasauna

.: Glissade Pressee
.: There is no boon for which we do not render service
.: The Debut of the Tambourine Shoe

From their debut Rover

.: Very Much Alone pt.2: The Coke Binge
.: Very Much Alone pt.4: O, Fuck, I'm Fucked. Fuck.
.: O, God, I Have a Canoe

Also check out emusic for downloads, the Daytrotter Sessions and a live show, Winfield Aught-Four Stage 7.

Well that's it for today. Let that soak in and make sure to check these guys out. I think the cds on the desk have hit the high water mark and hopefully will start to recede over the next few weeks. Thanks for reading and check out the latest podcast here...CP7 on it's way.
